Solution‐based Synthesis of Earth-abundant Materials for Photoelectrocatalysis

Photoelectrocatalysis is an attractive strategy to utilize to perform desirable reactions. For example, photoelectrochemical water splitting converts intermittent solar light into storable and sustainable hydrogen fuels. However, three critical requirements of efficiency, scalability, and robustness must be met if photoelectrocatalysis to be a viable technology. Solution-based synthesis generally does not require expensive equipment and can be operated under mild conditions, beneficial for scalable materials production. Therefore, it is essential to develop solution-based synthesis to prepare efficient and robust materials for photoelectrocatalysis. In this talk, examples of using the solution-based method to synthesize metal oxides in the application of photoelectrocatalysis will be discussed in detail, along with the fundamental concepts of photoelectrocatalysis.

Dr Lai grew up in Taiwan and obtained her BSc degree in Chemical Engineering at NCKU Taiwan in 2007 and an MSc degree in Chemical Engineering at NTU Taiwan in 2009. She joined the Reisner group in Cambridge in 2011 to pursue her PhD studies and obtained her PhD degree in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge in 2015. Dr Lai was an assistant professor at the Department of Materials and Optoelectronic Science, NSYSU, Taiwan, from 2016 to 2019. She has been appointed as an assistant professor of Materials Science and Engineering, NCKU Taiwan, since Aug 2019. Dr Lai’s research interests include artificial photosynthesis and photo-reforming.
