摘要 :

Metallic nanoparticles have many applications in physics, chemistry, and biomedicine, e.g. in catalysis, imaging, and even as pigment. Their properties strongly depend on their size, shape, crystallinity and surface functionalization. Synthetic protocols are usually bottom-up, i.e. particles are formed by reduction of the corresponding metal salts in solution in the presence of suitable capping agents. Modern methods of investigation permit a deep view into their nature, from the metal core to the organic shell. In-situ methods give insight into the formation process which is, after all, still associated with many empiric "alchemistic" procedures and not well understood. Chemical reactions, nucleation, and crystal growth are all complex processes that are acting together until the final particles have been formed. The current state of the art is presented with a special emphasis on ultrasmall nanoparticles (1-2 nm).
